Cavern - River cooter (Pseudemys concinna), adult, female. Cavern entered CMTR's care on 07/12/17. SCL ~14 inches. Cavern was struck (probably by a boat propeller), causing a very large hole in her carapace, directly over her lung. When her lung deflates, the hole is about 3' deep. The skin covering the lung is healed, but will never be as strong as shell. Cavern will need a very large tank or backyard pond that is escape-proof and protected from predators. Before she is rehomed, a patch will be put over the hole in her shell, but this patch will not be permanent. Adopter agrees to monitor the patch and have the patch replaced as needed. No special needs other than patch maintenance. For additional care guidelines see http://www.reptilesmagazine.com/Turtles-Tortoises/Turtle-Care/Cooter-Turtles/ Suggested Adoption Donation: Adoptive family is responsible for shipping when applicable. We will ship turtles overnight unless weather conditions are prohibitive to the safety and comfort of our foster turtles. While we do not charge an adoption fee, any donation over the cost of shipping will contribute to offsetting vet care and other expenses associated with rehabilitating our charges. Please familiarize yourself with the laws and regulations of your resident state pertaining to the guardianship of reptiles. For example, many states require you possess a fishing license to have a reptile as a companion animal.
