About Kuma Bear

Kuma Bear is a 6 year old Akita mix. He has been well loved and cared for since a puppy, living inside with the family. Unfortunately, we have to rehome him. He is very bonded to us. He is reserved and somewhat fearful or nervous around males he does not know. He prefers adult females. He is protective of us and his home. He does warm up. He has been gentle and patient with our children he has grown up with, but nervous around loud and disruptive youngsters. He is well bonded to his 3 year old furry sibling, a tiny female terrier we adopted as a puppy. He was recently exposed to cats 3 years ago for the first time. He chased one of the cats and when a relative tried to intervene in that excited moment, Kuma bit the relative. So, he would do best in a home without cats. We believe the circumstances contributed to the bite, but we learned he has a prey drive following that unfortunate incident. Kuma is house trained and will use his kennel when necessary, but he prefers to be with the family. He is not destructive. He has a stubborn and independent streak at times...as many Akitas do, but he knows to sit, shake and down. He is treat motivated. He walks well on a leash, but can be nervous if strangers or unknown dogs quickly approach. He will need a home with a fenced space to run and play fetch. It is with a heavy heart that Kuma must find a new family. Serious inquiries only. Please be familiar with the Akita breed if considering adoption.
