Bonzo is looking for a quiet and experienced home with adults who understand dog behavior and known how to manage a little bit of attitude. Bonzo is lightly heartworm positive. On adoption he will be sent home with 12 months of Triheart heartworm preventative. This is called the slow kill method of heartworm treatment. Please discuss with your veterenarian options for heartworm treatment before considering adoption of Bonzo. Weight: 9.5 lbs Height: 9' at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $229 Fence needed? Vastly preferred - he's good on a leash but enjoys yard privileges and barking at the neighbor dogs. FYI inside he's a pretty quiet dog although he barks at strangers. What kind of home would be best for me? Bonzo thrives on routine and structure. He does not like it when dinner or you are late. Things should run on time and as expected! His best behavior is when he's had that routine life and someone who knows his quirks. What is my personality like? Quirky and different. Bonzo has a whole code of conduct that you need to learn to be able to work with him. He can be affectionate but he also will growl at you if he wants space. He does not seem to know how to accept love. Right now, one of his caregivers finds if she picks him up with a towel, he does much better. He is well crate trained and will go into his crate most of the time with the cue 'Bedtime for Bonzo.' If he's giving you a bit of a hard time about that, we throw a treat in first. He loves to be sung to and verbally praised and he loves treats. Bonzo is an absolutely gorgeous little dog and he likes being groomed and made pretty. With some loving discipline and structure, the inside will improve. We've seen a lot of improvement over the last few months but I do not believe he's ever going to be trustworthy around strangers when inside his own home or ever with children. How I act when I first meet new people: He'll head towards you in a 'I'm going to get you before you get me/what are you doing in my space' when he's at home and he means it. He's bitten (teeth marks, very slight puncture) two strangers both who were coming into his space. When verbally called off he stopped immediately. In our adoption center, where he only occasionally visits, he did not do that although once he got comfortable on the couch, he did growl at a caregiver who was testing whether we could pick him up. His primary caregiver used a towel to move him on that occasion. He would be an excellent watch dog - no one will get in. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: We were told 6 years old and that sounds about right based on his behavior Please note - we do not ship dogs. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet.
