About Benny

Benny is a 6 yo handsome, active, and affectionate beagle boy. He is so typical that he has some common beagle puppy traits...being mouthy when he plays, chewing on the occasional inappropriate items, etc. Benny loves to play and he loves to snuggle. :) He is house- and crate-trained and will willingly spend quiet time in his crate, even when his human family is home. In addition to playing, Benny enjoys his snuggle time and will usually just melt for a belly- and or ear-rub, although if he is feeling playful he will try to turn it into a game. He will also bring a rope or other toy to initiate a game of tug when he is feeling playful, too. To date Benny has had little interest in the resident cats, and he has gotten along well with dogs of all ages and sizes. He would do well as an only dog as well provided his adopters insure that he gets enough exercise! The biggest difference between Benny and a typical beagle (if there is such a thing) is that he MUST sleep crated. Benny has a sleep-disorder called RBD (REM-Sleep Behavior Disorder) that causes him to have episodes where he snaps, growls and lunges and anybody (or any dog) in the vicinity may be in his way at this time and end up being bitten. Benny is NOT AWAKE during these episodes (despite what it looks like) and THIS IS NOT A BEHAVIORAL OR TRAINING PROBLEM!! He is not awake and does not have conscious control during these episodes - he is truly asleep. If awoken during an incident, Benny will simply look around, curl back up and go right back to sleep. In his foster home he usually has one or two episodes a night, although he has had more some nights, usually following excessive stimulation. This is quite manageable in a vigilant household.
