Zhorbit is a 10-year-old 15-lb. Rat Terrier, who has been in foster care for seven years because of residual issues from her original home where she was neglected, not socialized or trained, and very likely abused. As a result, she is a fearful dog when she is out of her comfort zone and she exhibits typical fear responses that she will never unlearn. The key to living with Zhorbit is to earn her trust and reinforce her positive behaviors. Her foster parents have worked extensively on this goal with excellent results. Zhorbit has taken classes that included basic obedience, agility, and nose work, and each new skill has improved her confidence. When the people around her are sensitive to her stressors and triggers, Zhorbit is happy, relaxed, playful, and obedient. In fact, she is a funny dog who will entertain you will her silly antics! She is not a fan of cats, and while she gets along with other small dogs, she would not do well in a multidog household and probably would be happiest as an only dog. Zhorbit is house-trained and will bark to be let out. She is afraid of crates, but no problem--she can be left loose in the house for many hours at a time without having accidents or getting into mischief. Zhorbit enjoys daily walks for exercise and also likes to snuggle up to her favorite human for quiet time. Potential adopters must live within driving distance of Lansing, Michigan, so they can have a preadoption meet-and-greet with Zhorbit and her foster parents. Due to Zhorbit's fear issues, she cannot be adopted to a family with young children.
